Are Your Hormones in Check?

“Hormones” Don’t Have to Be a Taboo Topic

As a mama to 4, there is no denying I’ve had my fair share of hormonal roller coasters! Nowadays, there seem to be social media accounts, podcasts and other informational resources left and right regarding hormones. Why?! Is it anything new that we haven’t already known about and dealt with for thousands of years? Well, yes and no. The woman’s body and the role that hormones play is not “new” per se… but the odds being completely stacked up against us in the way that they are is rather… unprecedented.

A little chuckle just to keep things lighthearted…

I used to feel completely overwhelmed by the topic of hormones. All I really knew was there was a stereotype surrounding “hormonal teens” and women during PMS. Entering motherhood, I realized that our hormones actually play a beautiful role in the orchestration that is conception, pregnancy and childbirth. Our hormones might get a bad rap for a lot of “moodiness” and confusing feelings, but they also do a lot of good for us!

Your Hormones Can Be Your Best Friend or Your Worst Enemy

It really comes down to whether or not your hormones are balanced! Obviously “hormone balancing” is no simple thing, and there are endless different types of specialists who go to school for upwards of an entire decade specifically to educate and practice in the area of hormones! By no means do I compare myself to someone of such expertise… but I do know a lot more than I did even just a few years ago.

As women, our hormones play a part in a beautiful symphony that ebbs and flows (pun intended) throughout our cycle. Knowing what these hormones are and how you can support them at the right time can be extremely helpful in feeling in tune with your body and the way you’re feeling.

While there is so much I could get into, I only intend to scratch the surface at this point. Baby steps, ok? Personally, I would say my biggest season of researching hormones was when I was at a pretty intense point of feeling the postpartum mood swings. My baby was actually over a year old so I’m not sure if that counts as postpartum! I was also very early pregnant so it was probably a mix of those baby-growing hormones as well as just overall exhaustion and stress from being a working mom (at the time). Can you say HIGH CORTISOL! I did end up implementing a targeted protocol to heal my gut (a very central hub for your hormones) and that mostly included Happy Juice which, at the time and still to this day, is something that works very effectively for me and I will continue to shout that from the roof tops (more on that HERE)

Now that I’m finalizing my doula certification and fertility coach training…

I am realizing there is EVEN more to hormone balancing than I thought. I’ve already been familiar with what things in our environment are good for your hormones versus what is harmful, but something I never realized is that what some mamas need support with isn’t necessarily the same as what another mama might need. We all (most likely) have imbalances - but the extent of how much those imbalances can vary from person to person is vast. It’s helpful to start paying attention to how your body feels and then researching what imbalances that might be an indicator of.

In the near future, I plan on coming out with more ways to understand hormones and to support you in your journey of balancing your levels out (stay tuned for my Fiat Birth Services membership!) but for now, I want to keep the ball rolling with your research. You can snag my free Hormone Quiz here and once you’ve had the chance to take a look at it and figure out where you might be experiencing an imbalance, I will follow up and we can discuss some ways to start supporting your body - baby steps! Best of luck friend and we’ll be in touch soon:)
